This is true for both the written and practical skills sections.

The practical skills portion is scored based on how well you perform the tasks. This section is strictly a 'pass' or 'fail' section.

Passing the CNA exam means receiving at least the minimum score required by your state. 


Most states set their minimum score at 70%. 
However, make sure you always check your state's requirements, as this minimum score is not universal for all states.

A good score on the CNA exam sits at around 85%. 
Considering that most states have their minimum set at 70%, exceeding that by 15% can be considered a favorable performance. 

How many questions do I need to get right on the CNA exam to pass?

The number of questions you must answer correctly to pass the CNA depends on your state. 


States offer exams with 60 to 70 questions, depending on the provider. 
If your exam is comprised of 70 questions, you will need to correctly answer around 60 questions to receive a 70% score. This score is, on average, the lowest score considered as passing. 

What happens if I fail the CNA exam?

If you fail any section of the CNA, you are allowed to retake it. 
The retake policy for each state is different, but generally, you are allowed to retake each section three times before you must repeat your training program. 


If your state does not require a training program before taking the CNA, they will have more lenient retake policies.

Wrong answers do not count against you on the CNA exam. 
You will only be awarded points for the questions answered correctly.

You can't see which CNA exam questions you missed.
